If Microsoft has its way, you won’t be able to buy XP after June 30th, 2008. According to some sources, the public wishes otherwise.

Like all new operating systems, Windows Vista ushered in a new era of incompatibility for existing Windows users. In spite of this, Microsoft plans to start retiring Windows XP on June 30th. Some users, however, want to keep XP alive for years to come so that they can continue to work reliably and efficiently.HiFi Tower UK

ThortonsAccording to a Popular Science report, there’s a grassroots effort to force Microsoft to keep selling XP to customers in shrink-wrapped packages and to OEMs. What’s behind this movement? Just to clarify, it’s not really a “grassroots” movement. It’s actually being orchestrated by InfoWorld, an online news publication.

That said, with 71,386 people signed up as of noon Jan. 30th, 2008 to the Save Windows XP petition, clearly the movement is tapping into a well spring of resentment opposing Vista operating system upgrades.

That’s bad news for Vista but it’s not in any way surprising. Windows XP works well enough for me and millions of other people all over the world. Why should we give up all the great applications we’ve relied upon for years only to find out they’re either crippled or refuse to run at all on Vista?

There really is not a compelling reason to switch to Vista for most people. If you want the cool 3D Vista task switcher that previews your apps, you can just buy TopDesk for $20 and XP will do the same thing. Nothing special there.

If XP’s not fast enough and you need more speed, then buy more RAM, a faster hard drive or clean up your PC and install anti-spyware software. These methods will work and It’ll be much cheaper and less frustrating than trying to deal with the plethora of driver issues that many XP users are reporting when they make the switch to Vista.

What Microsoft doesn’t want us to realize and accept is that there’s nothing wrong with us wanting to stay with a tried and true operating system or program. Windows 2000 and 98, for example, still have their business users, even though neither operating system has been supported by Microsoft for several years now. The difference this time around is how little success Microsoft has had in getting users to switch to Vista.

It’s such a bad operating system that web sites are turning up that show people how to DOWNGRADE their Vista systems to XP. And the Apple folks are having a field day showing their Vista vs Apple guys commercials. Vista is spawning a slew of Apple converts! Talk about shooting yourself in the foot with a marketing program gone wrong.

I’m not saying there’s no room for improvement in Windows XP. Dual processor support is a much needed feature but you’re going to have to do a lot better at convincing me to change. Some fancy whiz-bang interface features or some less-than-practical security features are not going to do it for me. There’s just not enough benefit to make me want to change.

Clearly, Microsoft has dropped the ball with Windows Vista.

Anyway, I won’t be hopping on the Vista band wagon anytime soon. If you have Vista and like it, that’s great. But I need the reliability and ease of use that for now, belongs to Windows XP.

Obviously, Vista or perhaps the upcoming Vista replacement Windows 7, will eventually replace most XP systems. Change is good but not if that change creates problems that never existed in the first place. So let’s hope that Microsoft delays killing XP support at least until it can make Vista a worthy choice for upgraders.

For those who want a taste of South Africa…

Perhaps the most famous South African export is biltong – a cured dry meat, similar to jerky (only thicker). If you haven’t sampled this flavourful snack, then getting it from a South African butcher is a great place to start – and will give you the choice between ‘wet’, ‘medium’ or ‘dry’.

Outside of the biltong, the best way to sample some traditional cookery is on the braai – the South African barbeque. All kinds of meat, fish, potato and onions are cooked over hot coals outdoors, and you’ll find that every suburban house (and many of South Africa’s luxury hotels) has a braai area (some even have indoor ones, too!). The pick of the grill are the sosaties (kebabs), boerewars (coarsely cut spicy sausages), steaks and ribs. You may find these meats are accompanied by pap (a traditional porridge) or vetkoek (deep fried dough balls). It makes for a very satisfying meal!

Away from the braai, Bobotie is a must – a sort of spicy cottage pie. It generally consists of spiced minced meat (and sometimes fruit) baked with an egg based toping.

For the brave…

If you really want to blend in with the locals’ traditional cuisine on your South Africa holiday, there are some (apparently!) very tasty recipes that may seem a little on the “exotic side” for Western palettes. Two dishes spring to mind – firstly Skop. Skop is the whole head of a sheep, cow or goat, skin, nose, ears and other bits removed and then boiled. Certainly not to everyone’s tastes, but maybe slightly more than Mashonzha, which is Mopani caterpillar cooked with chilli, and usually eaten with peanuts. Don’t worry – most luxury hotels in South Africa will have something more conventional if you’re feeling squeamish!

And to wash it down…

The country’s Winelands are a popular attraction to South Africa’s holiday makers, so why not enjoy some of their fine produce with your meal? The grapes from the Cape area make rather nice pinotage and hanepoort which accompany most meats rather pleasantly. If wine isn’t your thing, then there are a number of international beverages available quite widely. Beer is also very popular, and if you want to enter the spirit, then Castle, Amstel and Black Label are all popular local brands.

If this sounds a bit too intimidating for you, don’t forget that a luxury South Africa holiday will usually take in its fair share of familiar looking restaurants, so no matter what you’re craving, you’ll find it in the bigger cities. It’s worth trying some of the local food to get the full experience and who knows, you may be missing the smoke of the braai on your return to England!

I was lucky to be invited by Lions Sands Private Game Reserve to stay with them for a weekend. Having flown into Johannesburg from Cape Town I then caught the once daily South African Airlink flight to the Mala Mala airstrip in the Sabi Sands departing at 11h10 and arriving at 12h10. The last minutes of the flight before landing provided awesome views over the Sabi Sands Game Reserve. A few 4×4 safari vehicles from various different lodges in the area accompanied the lonely airstrip, which was surrounded by thick African bushveld. The lodges’ representatives patiently waited for their guests’ arrival. After being welcomed and offered a refreshing cool drink by the Lion Sands representative, I then enjoyed a 40 min game drive through the reserve en route to the lodge.

The Lion Sands Game Reserve offers two exclusive lodges, River Lodge (4 star) and Ivory Lodge (5 star) and both are situated right on the banks of the Sabi River, providing a opportunity to watch game come to drink throughout the day.

After checking into my beautiful room at River Lodge, lunch was served on the raised wooden deck overlooking the river. The large selection of fresh tasty dishes had me eating much more than my fair share. There is a saying in Afrikaans that goes “maagie vol, oogies toe” meaning tummy full, eyes closed. It was time to wander off to my room for an afternoon nap.

The general daily program at all game lodges offers time to really unwind and relax in luxury and comfort while still offering the excitement of being deep in the bush surrounded by game. The general activities offered by Lion Sands run as follows:

An early morning wake up call before dawn, a quick cup of coffee and some fruit or a biscuit followed by a 3 to 4 hour game drive where you have the chance to spot not only the Big 5, but also a wide variety of other game species. You will then return to the lodge for an awesome display of tasty dishes for breakfast and then have time to relax. Enjoy the sun at the pools edge, make use the health spa and enjoy a full body massage, sleep in comfort of your luxury room, or on a hammock over looking the river. You also have the option of a bush walk with a qualified game ranger, a highly recommended activity. The times of these walks will differ depending on the time of the year and the heat of the day.

Lunch will then be served, yet another sumptuous meal followed by more relaxation, reading a book, chatting to the game rangers about their experiences in the bush. A River Tour is also offered, which will get you closer to the rivers edge and to large pools where hippos have made their territories. Some enormous Nile crocodiles can also be seen.

High tea is then offered just before the afternoon game drive. The game drive will run into the evening after sunset, which offers an opportunity to see nocturnal animal species such as the ant bear, pangolin, various owl species, bush babies and brown hyenas. The game tracker who sits on the front of the vehicle during the game drives will manage a spot light. During winter these afternoon and early morning game drives can get quite chilly. Although the open game vehicle provides awesome 360 degrees game viewing, it does not provide warmth! Although the lodge will offer blankets, your own thick jackets, scarves, gloves and woollen hats will be welcomed during winter.

Depending upon the weather, the lodge will provide a special “bush dinner” every alternate evening. Guests are driven to either a dry riverbed or under the African sky on an open plain. Lit only by paraffin lamps and a big open campfire, this dining experience makes for one of the most unforgettable memories of a visit to Africa. Listen to the night sounds and enjoy a sumptuous meal cooked on the open-coals of the bush fire.

My special weekend away had come to an end. The SA Airlink flight departed at 12h30 and arrived in Johannesburg at 13h35, which meant that there was just enough time to enjoy an early morning game drive and a sumptuous breakfast.

R40 will get you up to about 30 minutes playtime with either the very young cubs, or the slightly older and more boisterous cubs. It’s an unforgettable experience and definitely worth doing. As you drive through the park, you’ll pass by giraffe, zebra and all sorts of buck. The Seaview Lion park also offers the rare opportunity to view the unique White Lion as well as the beautiful tiger.

Kwa Zulu Natal also has many choices for exceptional game viewing. The St Lucia National Park offers not only beautiful game viewing, but is also known as a birder’s paradise because of a the enormous variety of birdlife. Swaziland’s game viewing is one of the top in the country because of its raw beauty and rugged terrain. The Swaziland game viewing parks are not overly commercial and thus offer game viewing in its most natural form.
